Simulation of multi-phase flow in porous media has wide applications, which include in particular the management of existing petroleum fields and the development of new oil and gas reservoirs. In this talk the speaker will introduce a new efficient IMPES scheme for the simulation of incompressible and immiscible two-phase flow in heterogeneous porous media with capillary pressure. The new algorithm is locally mass conservative for both phases. Moreover, the new scheme is unbiased with regard to the two phases and the saturations of both phases are bounds-preserving if the time step size is smaller than a certain value. They will also introduce an efficient energy stable numerical method for the Maxwell-Stefan-Darcy two-phase flow model in porous media, which can preserve multiple important physical properties of the model. Some interesting examples will be shown to demonstrate the efficiency of the new numerical methods.
Huangxin Chen obtained his bachelor degree in Mathematics at Hunan University in 2006, he performed his doctoral research at Chinese Academy of Science and obtained doctoral degree in 2011. He did his postdoc research at KAUST. Since September 2011, he has been working in the School of Mathematical Sciences at Xiamen University first as assistant professor, then as associate professor and professor. His research interest include adaptive finite element method, multigrid method, discontinuous Galerkin methods and their applications in computational fluid dynamics. Dr. Chen’s research has been supported by National Excellent Youth Funding of China in 2021.
